The University of Miami’s Health System, UHealth, has a career opportunity in the Central Business Office located in Coral Gables for a Medical Coder. This position applies the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, claim processing and reimbursement. Specific duties include, but are not limited to; applying appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes on inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory surgery, ancillary services and clinic charts. Abstracts pertinent information from inpatients, outpatients, observation, special procedures and clinic records into the UChart System. Brings identified coding concerns to the Coding Manager for resolution. Stays abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Applies National Coverage Determination and Local Coverage Determination policies on Medicare accounts for Medical Necessity. Abides by the Standard of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Association. Corrects claims denials and rejections pertaining to coding and medical necessity issues.

The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows: Completion of a two year program in Health Information Management with AHIMA approval status. Credential in Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Certified Coder Specialist (CCS required) by the American Health Information Management Association, or eligible to write the CCS examination in one year’s time with a maximum of three attempts. Three to five years of inpatient, outpatient and reimbursement coding experience. Ability to secure and maintain confidential data, following all HIPPA guidelines and procedures.
