• On March 18, 2016, HHS OIG Most Wanted Fugitive Jorge Guevara-Portillo was apprehended by the U.S. Coast Guard near the Bahamas. In April 2009, Portillo was indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit health care fraud, health care fraud, and money laundering. Investigators believe that Portillo, through his durable medical equipment (DME) company, falsely billed Medicare more than $2 million for DME that was never provided to beneficiaries.
  • Portillo was president of Westland Medical Equipment Corporation, based in Hialeah, Florida.
  • An arrest warrant was issued for Portillo in April 2009. Portillo fled and remained a fugitive until his recent arrest. He is in custody and will face charges stemming from the indictment.
